Peter Snow overheats, bursts into flames
6 May 2005 03:47
Peter Snow has in the last few minutes burst into flames out of sheer excitement. The legendary statistician, who had been covering the election for the BBC, had become increasingly excitable throughout the evening, as he was able to make brightly coloured blobs fly around a virtual studio and produce a variety of swingometers with whooshing sound effects.
However, following the declaration of the Enfield Southgate seat – made up of the estates of the former England footballer Harry Enfield and comedian Gareth Southgate – smoke began to appear from his ears. He quickly handed back to presenter David Dimbleby who removed his glasses, replaced them, handed over to Jeremy Paxman and then interrupted him in order to put his glasses back on again.
Returning to Snow later on, thicker clouds of smoke appeared from his ears and then from underneath his collar as he began gesturing wildly at his election battlegrounds chart. Assistants rushed on with fire extinguishers just in time to see his hair burst into flames, at which point Dimbleby promptly took over to further fumble with his spectacles.
A spokesman for the BBC said that Snow would reappear later following a rewiring job.
