| ![]() War Analysis: Iraq's morale Morale is essential for any fighting force to remain effective, but what is morale like for the troops involved in the current war in Iraq? DeadBrain investigates. Reports yesterday suggested that morale in the Iraqi army is at an all-time low after U.S. forces in Basra toppled several statues of Saddam Hussein. Professor Douglas Ramsbottom of Southampton University, a world authority in statues of brutal dictators, explained why. "Statues of brutal dictators are essential for every brutal dictator's army," he told DeadBrain. "You can have your guns and your tanks and your grenades, but without a good statue of your leader to remind you of how great he is you haven't got a hope." Coalition leaders hope that the resolve of Iraq's leadership will fade as a result of the continuous bombardment of their seat of government in Baghdad. "We have wiped out government buildings, military structures and several key shopping districts," said a senior Pentagon planner. "We were expecting this to affect their morale a great deal, but so far the effect appears to be minimal. All we've done is piss off the civilians." Despite some surrenders, the Iraqi army is still fighting back and has allegedly shot down some U.S. aircraft and fired missiles at Kuwait. This is bound to give their troops a boost and defence analysts say they may continue fighting for some time yet. See also War Analysis: The Coalition's morale
