Diana butler not guilty of being magpie
The trial of Princess Diana's former Butler, Paul Burrell, collapsed yesterday after personal intervention from the Queen. Mr Burrell had been accused of being a magpie who liked to gather "small shiny things that don't belong to him", but it emerged that the Queen had previously spoken to Mr Burrell and discovered he wasn't a trinket-collecting bird. Mr Burrell has now flown back to his home in the north of England, leaving taxpayers with a bill for over £1.5m and "a large nest" in the Old Bailey.

NHS ill-prepared for patients
The NHS would struggle to cope with patients, a report out today revealed. According to the National Audit Office, many hospitals would have difficulties in the event of patients requiring medical treatment arriving, and the ambulance service would find it hard to get them there in the first place. Officials have called the report "worrying" and have pleaded for people who might be considering becoming ill not to do so.

Prescott "could have been avoided"
As the fire strike enters its second day, representatives from the Fire Brigades Union are insisting that John Prescott "could have been avoided". "It gives me no pleasure to have to talk to Mr Prescott, and all the indications are that he could have been avoided," said FBU leader Andy Gilchrist last night. "With some careful manoeuvring we could have got round him without being spotted, but because of the government's willingness to put the public – i.e. me – at risk, that wasn't to be. To be honest with you, I fear for my life through talking to him."
