  Speech Negotiations Begin
Negotiations began over the future of the Queen's Speech this morning, following a "dismal" performance on Christmas Day. The Queen, whose 50-year contract for the speech expired this week, has so far declined to comment on whether she will be re-applying for the job.

The BBC and ITV, who broadcast the speech simultaneously, were said to be "disappointed" at the content of this year's speech, which included "boring stuff like war and foot and mouth". In a joint press release, they said they wanted to make the speech "more relevant to the people". Although the bidding process for a new presenter has not yet begun, several key contenders have already revealed that they would be willing to take over the reins.

Caroline Aherne, who writes and stars in the Royal Family, told reporters in Australia that she would like to bring a more humorous tone to the speech, rock group Queen want the speech to be accompanied by music and, according to television journalist Gregory T Mullet, Carol Vorderman is also rumoured to be a contender on the grounds that "she does everything else so she might as well do this as well".

Hey, look at this!
