Inquiries "a waste of time"
20 Mar 2002
The government today announced new plans to restrict the number of inquiries it commissions. According to Gregory T Mullet, the Minister for Inquiries, there are "far too many useless and unnecessary inquiries launched by the government. They all cost money and more often than not they’re a waste of time."
Under the new plans, ministers would be severely restricted in the number of inquiries they can ask for in any one year. But, even as Mr Mullet was telling journalists his intentions, the Northern Ireland Secretary, Dr John Reid, announced details of three separate inquiries into the theft of documents from a police station. Mr Mullet was said to be "outraged" at the incident and has launched an immediate inquiry.
Excuse me, would you mind?
