Tory sacked in race row
5 May 2002
Shadow cabinet member Ann Winterton was sacked today after a racist joke she made was published in a Sunday newspaper. Mrs Winterton made the joke, which was said to have been offensive to some members of the audience, at a rugby club dinner in her constituency on Friday.
The Conservatives' racist remarks spokesman, Lord Gregory T Mullet, told DeadBrain that she had to go. "If find it completely unacceptable that a woman holding such a high position could make an offensive joke like this," he said while reading a book of quotes by the Duke of Edinburgh. "And, what is even more shocking, is that she had the gall to put it in a letter to the Sunday Mirror! That's pretty stupid even by my standards."
"And apart from that it wasn't even very good! I could tell you a better racist joke," he boasted after pouring a glass of sherry. "For a start, there's the one about the Kosovan and the -" Lord Mullet resigned later this afternoon.
A spokesman for Mrs Winterton has insisted that she is sorry for telling the joke. "Mrs Winterton now agrees that Iain Duncan Smith is a fully-fledged member of the human race," he said at a press conference in Congleton, Cheshire. "Under no circumstances could Mr Duncan Smith be thought of as 'some sort of ape-thing' and Mrs Winterton apologises for any offence caused."
