Celebrations on Europe Day
9 May 2002
Millions of excited people across the country were holding street parties today in honour of Europe Day. Roads and businesses were closed so people could share in the spirit of the day, which was said to be "mostly white". The "annual celebration of the diversity of cultures within Europe" drew people from all walks of life out onto the streets to share their happiness at being in Europe.
"It's just so amazing, being part of the EU," said one man waving a flag on a Glasgow housing estate. "I totally agree," said another in Birmingham, who was coincidentally linked live via satellite. "It will probably overshadow the Queen's Jubilee and even the World Cup!"
The Foreign Office in Whitehall opened its doors for the day to welcome in schoolchildren and "other gullible people" to share in the delights of the EU. Gregory T la Mullet, the French Ambassador to Alton Towers, was seen to be in tears at the joy of the whole occasion. However, the celebrations were marred by violent protests in London after the German Embassy ran out of free beer.
Hey, look at this!
