| | Distraught fans rampage through Cardiff
3 Oct 2002
Britain is in the grip of mob action and violence tonight following the surprise split of the popular pop group Hear'Say. Since almost immediately after the band's press conference finished on Tuesday, enraged fans have been parading the streets, arguing with fans of rival group Liberty X. As we reported last month, Liberty X have a massive following of loyal supporters who aren't afraid of showing their colours, so it is little wonder that by last night peaceful protests had descended into violent riots.
Some of the worst clashes took place in band member Noel Sullivan's hometown of Cardiff in the early hours of this morning. At least four gangs of thugs marched through the main shopping districts shouting abusive slogans about Liberty X, holding portraits of Simon Cowell aloft and "crying a lot". Police say that the trouble was made worse when Cardiff football fans decided to join in the mourning on the side of Liberty X, resulting in even more severe violence.
Scotland Yard's Serious Overreaction Squad (SOS) have appealed for calm. "Look, we can't have all these thugs running around the place causing trouble," said Detective Chief Inspector Douglas Ramsbottom. "We just don't have the resources to arrest them all. And besides, Hear'Say weren't that good anyway."
Following DCI Rambsottom's statement, police have assembled a "welcoming committee" of around 50 riot police to aid in "negotiations" with the rioters in the streets around Scotland Yard.
This looks good...
