Britain on Strike

Fire strike called off for Children in Need
Britain is back to "normal" today, the Daily Mirror has announced. "Birds are stripping naked for us in the trees, children are being molested again and everything is just plain OK," chirped a happy editorial in this morning's edition. Piers Morgan's happiness is apparently due to the end of the first in a series of fire-fighters' strikes last night, one hour before the start of Children in Need.

"We had no choice but to end the strike before Children in Need started," said an aide close to the FBU's leader, Andy Gilchrist. "Our members are big fans of Terry Wogan and they really wanted to see Jeremy Vine singing – who could blame them?"

The government is now considering forcing the BBC to show pictures of dancing male newsreaders in tights every time a major union goes on strike as a way of ending industrial action.

The Conservatives have meanwhile criticised the BBC for this year's charity telethon. "I find it quite offensive that a public service broadcaster like the BBC can expose vulnerable young children to that poofter Dale Winton, all in the name of so-called charity," fumed the party's spokesman on inclusiveness, Douglas Ramsbottom MP, adding: "Did you see that Jeremy Vine though? He he."
