Powell criticises lack of incriminating evidence in Iraq dossier
US Secretary of State Colin Powell today criticised Iraq's 12,000-page weapons declaration, saying it had "totally failed" to meet his administration's requirements. "There is absolutely no evidence of hidden weapons, banned chemicals or illegal nuclear facilities in this document," he said angrily. "This is not what we wanted to see. There will be serious consequences if we don't find an excuse to bomb you soon. Under resolution 1441 there is the possibility of using military action in order to use military action, and I can't rule that out at this stage."

Other key figures in the Iraq crisis have also criticised the document. Hans Blix, the man in charge of the weapons inspections, said there was "no evidence" in the document to suggest that Saddam Hussein was still in possession of the weapons he had in the 1990s. "This really is very disappointing," he said. "How do they expect us to hang them if they don't give us some rope?"

The response from the British government was similarly negative, although a "helpful" cabinet suggestion that Britain should sell Iraq some more weapons so the UN could find them was voted down.
