Virgin Trains celebrates Christmas Day
Richard Branson's Virgin Trains celebrated Christmas Day today, three days after the rest of the country. Staff and passengers had their festivities delayed after the usual combination of maintenance problems, late-running trains and general incompetence. A spokesman for Virgin Trains said that the company was sorry for any inconvenience caused, but all delays were kept to a minimum.

Staff at rival operator Arriva were worse off, however. A strike by the RMT union meant that most of Christmas Eve and Boxing Day had to be cancelled and only a "skeleton service" consisting of a Bernard Matthews turkey roast and a bag of chips was available on Christmas Day. A plan to replace cancelled trains with "festive donkeys" meanwhile failed miserably.
