| | Blair reassures nation: we're all doomed
23 Jan 2003
The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, reassured the nation about the possibility of a terrorist attack on Tuesday. "An attack by al Qaeda on Britain is inevitable," he told a House of Commons committee. "We will all die a horribly painful death and there's nothing at all we can do to prevent it, but hey – let's not get downhearted about this. It would probably be even worse under the Conservatives."
Responding to the Mr Blair's claim that dying a horrible death would be worse if he was in charge, Conservative "leader" Iain Duncan Smith said in a brief statement that the party is currently undergoing a policy review and can make no firm commitments on terrorists attacking the country. "Broadly speaking, though, we are against it," he added.
During his visit to Washington today the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, struck back with a shocking blow against Mr Duncan Smith's lack of policy by saying he was unimpressed with it. Speaking shortly after talks with President Bush, Mr Straw told journalists: "I'm unimpressed."
Charles Kennedy, for the Liberal Democrats, has meanwhile reportedly recovered from the flu.
