| | Flood victims "to sue God"
4 Jan 2003
Victims of the recent floods in America have said they will "sue God" for damages. With clean-up operations still underway in some states, those affected have begun their legal challenges. "The whole of my home was flooded out," said one victim, "and I live on the third floor of an apartment block."
Others had similar stories to tell. "I used to own a herd of semi-wild llamas, but they were swept away in the floods," sobbed the manager of a small tourist attraction in Texas. "My prize Suri, George, was lost. I'd been training him up around the house. It's really very upsetting. I don't know who this God character is, but if he's responsible – if he's taken my George from me – he's going to pay!"
It is not clear how successful the victims' challenge could be as there is no precedent for suing God in the American justice system, but legal expert Douglas Ramsbottom referred us to what he called "a similar case" involving another mythical and powerful figure: that of "damn near everyone vs. Bill Gates". "From that case it's pretty obvious who's going to win," he added.
Oi, down here!
