![]() Growing row over BBC's Dolly death coverage 15 Feb 2003 There is a growing row today over the way the BBC handled its coverage of the death of Dolly the sheep, who died yesterday. In a strongly-worded editorial this morning, the Daily Mail said that the BBC "betrayed the British public" with its coverage. There was particular criticism for retired newscaster Peter Sissons, who was brought back specially to front the news programmes. Calling his decision not to wear a black tie "disgusting" in a full-page editorial, the newspaper went on to attack Mr Sissons' "brutish and insensitive" interview with one of the scientists who created Dolly. However, the BBC refutes any suggestion that the way it covered Dolly's death was inappropriate. "The BBC's coverage of Dolly's death was sensitive and respectful," said Director-General Greg Dyke in an interview on Radio 4 this morning. "Peter Sissons did an excellent job in difficult circumstances. There was no ban on black ties." Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace has announced that ITN will record a special interview with Prince Charles on the death of Dolly tomorrow, but has flatly denied that the BBC was snubbed because of its coverage. A spokesman said that interviews about the death of sheep in the royal family were normally rotated and all broadcasters will have equal access to it. A series of special programmes about Dolly's life will be shown over the next few days before her funeral on Thursday. Both the BBC and ITV 1 will show the procession and ceremony live, with the Dimbleby brothers presenting for each channel. The Queen, members of the royal family, scientists, politicians and Welsh people are all expected to be in attendance.
