| | Mr Bean enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury
27 Feb 2003
The outspoken actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson was enthroned as the new Archbishop of Canterbury in a ceremony today. Prayers were read, songs were sung and comedy routines were acted out at Canterbury Cathedral in a service attended by politicians, religious figures and acting colleagues from film and television.
DeadBrain's rarely-utilised religious affairs correspondent, Gregory T Mullet, says that it is the first time an atheist actor has been installed as the leader of the Church of England. "Rowan Atkinson will make a very unique Archbishop of Canterbury, partly because he has no experience in religious affairs, and partly because he isn't actually religious," he said. "This is clearly a part of the Church's plans to modernise itself, but only time will tell whether Mr Bean will make people want to pray again."
Mr Atkinson has yet to comment on his enthronement, although during the service he wore a large false beard and made several Mr Bean-like noises to the amusement of his audience. It's thought that he doesn't intend to abandon all the traditional features of the Church just yet.
Excuse me, would you mind?
