| | Travel chaos after unexpected Bank Holiday
21 Apr 2003
Millions of Britons' travel plans were disrupted today after an unexpected Bank Holiday brought chaos to roads and railways. Motorists were caught unawares on the M11 in Cambridgeshire and the A1M in Yorkshire when vehicles took to the road en masse, resulting in 6-mile tailbacks.
"I had no idea the roads would be this bad today," said one bored driver who had been waiting in a queue of traffic for over an hour. "I mean I know I had the day off work, but I didn't realise the rest of the country had as well. Now you tell me it's a Bank Holiday it's all clear. I suppose that explains why Neighbours wasn't on as well."
The rail network also suffered, with Paddington Station closed completely and many passengers enduring long delays or missing trains altogether because, according to transport expert Douglas Ramsbottom, "they're crap".
A spokesman for Network Rail said that the organisation was coping with what it described as "unexpected, freak, irregular and highly unlikely conditions" and that services would be "back to normal" by tomorrow. Further delays, cancellations and overcrowding can therefore be expected for the foreseeable future.
Oi, down here!
