| New non-competitive sports day a great success 19 May 2003 by Flash Gorman Today's school sports day at Maney Hill Primary School in Sutton Coldfield was judged a success by the parents of the pupils involved. Although not allowed to actually attend the event, the parents were sent a detailed letter by headmistress Judith Wressel, which outlined what a fun-filled day the children had enjoyed. In a pioneering move, Mrs Wressel has banned all parents from the sports day in order to ensure a non-competitive event. Mr P Rhodes, whose five year old son William attends the school, was clearly proud of his son's achievements. "Apparently my son/daughter may have attended the event and if he did then he/she adequately dispatched his/her duties in a non competitive manner," he said, beaming. "Brings a tear to your eye, it does". The highlight of the day was the 100 metres dash. In this exciting event, all 150 pupils formed a line and slowly marched forward when prompted by Mrs Wessel, via a megaphone. In a nail-biting finish all the pupils crossed the line simultaneously, after an incident free dawdle lasting over ten minutes. Explained Mrs Wressel, "In a traditional sports day, the children are encouraged to compete with each other, with prizes being given to the most successful children. This clearly does little to prepare the children for the real world. I mean what will they need competitive skills for when they leave school?" "Other than scholarships, University places, partners, jobs, promotions, professional sporting contests, any form of conflict and parking places," she added.
