| | Bush discusses Middle East peace with ABBA
21 May 2003 by Malcolm Drury
At the opening ceremony of a new American prison for political detainees, left wing editors and people who might once have met someone whose uncle could have been a member of al-Qaeda, US President "Boy" George W. Bush today announced that he had had a telephone conversation with the former Swedish pop sensation ABBA.
"It was far reaching and hopeful, touching on the need for enduring Middle East peace and a commitment to fight terror," he said. "I've always been a great fan of the Abbas - Ann-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Hill and Olivia Fig-Newton. Their music has always resignated with me - I particularly like Strawberry Fields Forever. It was great to talk to them, although I think it was only one of them - Benny, probably. We talked about the Middle East and whether or not they would be releasing a new album or touring again soon. But I have to say, Benny - or whoever - did seem a bit confused, and kept going on about the Palestinians. Is that a new group or something?"
It is thought to be the first time a US president has had Middle East peace discussions with a pop group. Spokeswoman Mildred K. Ramsbottom later announced that the President had a headache and would be taking the rest of the day off.
Oi, down here!
