Kennedy – "We can replace Conservatives as also rans"
Baby faced Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has used his end of conference speech to urge his members to raise their sights higher. In a rousing speech Mr Kennedy told his members to "go back to your constituencies and prepare to be hopelessly outvoted by Labour – but not quite as hopelessly outvoted as the Conservatives."

Mr Kennedy told the party faithful: "This is our time. The country is crying out for an ineffectual opposition to replace the Tories and we're just the guys to provide it." Mr Kennedy also pointed out that "coming second in the next election would also mean we'll get somewhere proper to sit at last."

His speech met with a mixed reception from Lib Dem members. Some like Andy Jones, from Birmingham, were clearly fired up. "He's right," whooped an obviously excited Mr Jones, "it's time to put the bar higher. We've shown that we can beat the independent candidates dressed as novelty fruit and let's face it, that description could also be applied to a lot of Tory runners."

Other members, however, were less convinced. "It's going against our party's beliefs," said one local councillor. "If I had wanted to be moderately successful in politics, then I wouldn't have joined the Liberal Democrats in the first place."

Wow, look at this!
