Left rejoices at truants' plans to oppose Bush with vandalism, smoking, sanctimony 19 Nov 2003 by Joey Sarajevo The extent of popular opposition to the visit of George W. Bush was underlined today as schools around the country braced themselves for the unparalleled outbreak of truancy expected to coincide with mass demonstrations against the President. Liberal commentators around the country have been quick to praise the bravery of students prepared to risk suspension or perhaps even expulsion from school in order to join the protests, with many pointing to the events as signalling a decline in political apathy amongst the young. DeadBrain has learned that young activists have planned a series of activities to register their putative disgust with American policies during their time away from education, to include:
Others plan to prove just how grown-up they are by attending the main demonstrations in London. "I can't believe they're not letting us take the day off school," pouted one seventeen year old, underlining her opposition to consumerism by tucking a copy of Cosmopolitan into her handbag. "These are issues of global importance. I once did a 24-hour famine for charity, so I really feel a connection to the worldwide victims of Bush's neo-Conservatism." Whilst educators and police are promising a crackdown, left-leaning broadsheet editors have been quick to support the truants with sympathetic news coverage. "We see this as defending the basic democratic rights of our children," said one. "Not to mention an ideologically sound way of copying the Telegraph's obsession with printing pictures of unfeasibly attractive sixth-form girls."
