Lib Dems launch "Big Fireside Chat"
The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Charles Kennedy, today launched his own public consultation exercise to rival Labour's 'Big Conversation'. 'Charlie's Big Fireside Chat', as it is to be known, is designed to encourage people who would not ordinarily talk to politicians to "sit around a fire, have a nice cup of tea and a good old chinwag".

Mr Kennedy was enthusiastic about his idea at his press conference this morning. "I am quite sure that the people of this country will be very keen to talk to us about what's on their minds," he said. "This won't be some toffee-nosed New Labour spin machine dinner party for the middle classes – this will be real people with cups of tea and biscuits talking to me and my colleagues."

He also dismissed accusations that it was a pointless gimmick that would achieve nothing. "Absolutely not, we have already acted on the advice gained from one chat," he told DeadBrain's tea and biscuits reporter. "One lovely old lady told me that she only likes custard creams and not the garibaldi biscuits that we had provided because the raisins get stuck in her teeth, so I immediately formed a task force to examine the possibilities for altering our biscuit provisions at future meetings."

Asked how effective this would actually be, Mr Kennedy was certain that it would be very helpful. "Although the task force is not due to report until next July, it has already produced a draft proposal for a vote to be held, under a proportional system, that would allow a variety of biscuits to be supplied according to the wishes of those present," he said. "Although the drawback to this method is that counting the votes, ordering and delivering the biscuits would take at least three days and by that time the meeting would be over."
