Iraqi army was unprepared for war, lacked WMD, says report 11 Dec 2003 Saddam Hussein's forces were left without key weapons during the war in Iraq, a report published today has confirmed. Throughout the war there were allegations in the media that the Iraqi troops did not have an adequate supply of weapons of mass destruction, but today's National Audit Office report has confirmed this. The report found that there was "a severe shortage of WMD in Iraq from the start of the war, so much so that it is now impossible to find any of them". It went on to describe how tanks and other battlefield equipment were poorly maintained and lacked spare parts; how soldiers were demoralised and without adequate training; and how most soldiers were without protection from chemical and biological weapons. The damning verdict has been seized upon by those opposed to the baiting of America and the international community that led to the war. "I was never in favour of getting the Americans to invade us and this is why. We were totally unprepared for war. I'm amazed we got through it at all," said one Baghdad shopkeeper. "If the Americans were a decent shot we'd all have been splattered. I'm holding Saddam responsible for this. He should resign immediately." Mass protests against the war were staged in Baghdad a few days before America started its bombing campaign when approximately ten people gathered in one of the city's suburbs with a small banner. Among those who were not arrested and tortured, there was a consensus that the war had been a mistake. "I think we're all of the same mind about this," said a spokesman for the group, consisting of one person, at a reunion this morning. "Causing a war was a terrible idea. If we had a government then it should apologise." Saddam Hussein was unavailable for comment, but his former Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, said that the Iraqi armed forces were in an excellent condition and were continuing in their victory against the coalition. In related news, the Iraqi government today announced a restructuring of the country's armed forces. A "significant overhaul" will see the army and air force transformed from a small, poorly-trained and ineffective fighting machine into a non-existent, poorly-trained and ineffective fighting machine, with new hi-tech equipment, which is thought to consist of the United States armed forces.
