 Tony Blair's reaction to Saddam Hussein's capture 14 Dec 2003 14:46 The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has welcomed the captured of failed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Speaking in the last hour, Mr Blair said that the coalition had "put freedom in the place of dictatorship", in the shape of an unelected governing council and American administrator. "The coalition needs an Iraq that is stable and prosperous and full of oil and so does the rest of the world," he continued. "Obviously we don't have that now, but hopefully we will have eventually." He went on to ask who was against the coalition. "And who's against us?" he asked, answering: "The tiny majority of Iraqis who wanted Saddam back...foreign terrorists...most of the Labour Party - most of the country in fact - France, Germany, Russia, the UN... you get the picture. But we were right, and while we respect their views, they are quite obviously wrong and, frankly, rather silly." Mr Blair also looked to the future. "This is a time for celebration, but also a time to look forward to President Bush's re-election campaign." He finished with a festive message of hope. "Let his capture bring about unity, reconciliation, mistletoe and wine, peace on earth, and children singing in multi-faith, politically correct rhyme. Now is a time of great opportunity. Let us seize it and use it for the good of the people of this government and let us pray that Hutton doesn't say anything nasty. Amen."
