Prince Charles more popular than sex5 Jan 2004 by Malcolm Drury
Prince Charles is more popular than sex in the UK according to statistics released by the Internet search service Google.
Following the Prince's denial of unspecified allegations of activities that could not be published in England and Wales for legal reasons last year, "Prince Charles" was the most searched for term on the Google search engine in the UK, far outstripping the usual most popular search terms, which are sexually oriented, such as "sex", "rubber", "banana sundae", and "Teletubbies". Douglas Ramsbottom, UK spokesman for Google, told DeadBrain that millions of Britons searched for the words "Prince Charles" on the website after the Prince issued his statement in November. He said that most of them were combined with other words and phrases which, because of possible legal implications, he was not at liberty to reveal. He did, however, specifically deny that they included the word "goat" or term "helium-filled balloon". Given the fact that the Prince had changed his name to *, pronounced as "the Royal formerly known as Prince Charles", Mr Ramsbottom said that the number of searches was surprising. He noted that "*" is not an acceptable search term in Google, but were it so, he had no doubt that searches for material on the heir to the British throne would have been even greater. An official for *, speaking on condition of anonymity, told DeadBrain that Clarence House was looking into recovering royalty fees from Google, as * had copyrighted the term "Prince Charles" at the same time as he had adopted the name *. The spokesman noted that * would be looking for compensation at the rate of £25 per use of the copyrighted term, and that discussions were planned with Google representatives to determine exactly how many times the term was passed via the Internet to searchers. In related news, a Downing Street spokesman told our reporter that Prime Minister Blair had expressed disappointment at not being the most-searched for person on Google and would be examining options for improving his public profile, including making weekly visits to British troops in Iraq.
