Blair eaten for breakfast by Frost
12 Jan 2004 by Brian Clarke
Tony Blair endured his toughest television interview yet yesterday when he was questioned by Sir David Frost. The Sunday morning TV show "Breakfast with Frost" is usually associated with gentle political discussions, but yesterday millions of viewers saw Blair visibly shocked by the fierce line of questioning coming from Sir David.
The programme began with the unveiling of a new set. The comfy sofas of old had gone, replaced with a windowless room, two wooden chairs and a table. Frost opened the exchange by asking, "Is it not fair to say that the people ordered a ham and pineapple and you have served them up a stale piece of crust with cheese? You call it a Quattro Formaggi but it is nothing of the sort, is it?"
Frost persisted with the pizza metaphor and at one point used pepperoni to represent foundation hospitals. He then clinically dissected the PM's policies in areas such as student tuition fees and the Euro.
Blair was seen to sweat and stutter as he struggled to provide coherent answers to the forensic questioning. In one exchange Blair was asked thirty times if he could rule out the possibility of traffic wardens ever being issued with guns. The interview ended abruptly when Frost tried to connect the Prime Minister's right arm to a polygraph machine while talking incomprehensibly about goat's cheese, tomato and mozzarella.
The hardening of Sir David's approach stems from criticism of his recent interview with US President George W Bush. Many thought that the President should have been asked tougher questions than the ones Frost put to him which included "what do you usually have for breakfast?" and "how's your dad?".
The US military are currently flying Sir David to Guantanamo Bay to interrogate suspects. An unnamed, but very tall senior general told DeadBrain, "We've tried everything to get information out of these enemy combatants. Torture didn't work. We see Sir David as the world's most formidable interrogator. He is one level up from torture."
