Date not announced for report into deaths of Iraqi civilians

A report into the deaths of thousands of Iraqi civilians is not to be published on 28th January, it was announced today. A statement not released by an eminent former judge in the last hour confirmed that no inquiry had taken place into the justification for going to war and that there would be no investigation into the civilian deaths. A televised statement will therefore not be made and a Commons debate has been deemed unnecessary.

Responding to the lack of statement, a Downing Street spokesman said that the Prime Minister would not be leading a debate on the issue and insisted that he had not misled an inquiry because none had taken place. The report will not be published the day after the government's crucial vote on student tuition fees, giving Mr Blair time to relax after the predicted rebellion by Labour backbenchers.

Both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have asked to see all publications related to the inquiry, which are thought to number approximately zero.
