Iain Duncan Smith offers Blair "ousting" counselling19 Jan 2004 by Malcolm Drury
DeadBrain has learned that the former interim leader of the Conservative Party, Iain "Duncan" Smith, has offered to provide advice and counselling to Tony Blair, who will soon be facing what may well be the most difficult period of his reign as Prime Minister.
Several political pundits believe that Mr Blair may not be able to hold on to his leadership of the Labour Party if the expected top-up fees rebellion from Labour MPs occurs and his credibility is then called in to question following the release of the Hutton Report. It is the possibility of Mr Blair being ousted from leadership of the Labour Party that led Mr Duncan Smith to offer advice and counselling based on his personal recent experience. Douglas Ramsbottom, a spokesman for Mr Duncan Smith, told our reporter that in spite of their frequent spats in the House of Commons while Mr Duncan Smith was interim Tory leader, the latter had a great deal of respect for Mr Blair. "After all, the PM is more or less one of us," he said, "and although we have some policy differences they're generally in the detail rather than the principle." "Tony would make a damn fine Tory," he added. Because of that, he said, Mr Duncan Smith feels a certain bond with the PM and so has offered Mr Blair his advice on how to avoid being ousted, and counselling on how to respond should he fail to avoid it. "Iain recognises that he was in denial for a long time prior to being ousted," said Mr Ramsbottom, "so his advice to Tony Blair would be to face up to reality. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister has consistently failed to do that with regard to Iraq and WMDs, so it doesn't look good for him." He said that in the event of Mr Blair being ousted, Mr Duncan Smith would be willing to sit down with him as a kind of grief counsellor and help him through the dark patches. "Iain is pretty well over it by now," said Mr Ramsbottom. "He does still feel a little down now and then but he's getting better day by day. He tries to keep himself occupied. For example, he's busy writing a new novel, he has begun trying to make a list of achievements for his memoir, he does a lot of jigsaw puzzles, and he's become a great fan of Emmerdale." It is understood that the current interim leader of the Tories, Michael "I believe" Howard, has endorsed Mr Duncan Smith's offer. A Downing Street spokesman told our reporter that the Prime Minister remains fully confident that he has been absolutely right in everything he has done and said and so feels he has nothing to fear. The spokesman also denied that the PM's best friend, US President "Boy" George W. Bush, has said that there was a job for Mr Blair at his Texas ranch whenever he wanted it.
