Sun's Hutton leak accurate and unbiased - shock

There is widespread shock in semi-literate and pornography-loving circles this afternoon after Lord Hutton's report into the death of Dr David Kelly appeared to tally completely with the Sun's version of events this morning. The alleged newspaper obtained quotes from the report before it was published, suggesting either psychic abilities on the part of Trevor Kavanagh or a leak from one of the parties who received a copy of the report in advance.

Lord Hutton is now considering legal action against the Sun, while Tony Blair's official spokesman said that he was "very angry" about being cleared of acting in an underhand way. "The Prime Minister enjoys having the toughest week of his career every other week, and then coming through it unscathed," he said. "For the Sun to spoil it for him by declaring him innocent before time is disgraceful."

Media commentators are meanwhile in a state of "utter astonishment" after Lord Hutton's conclusions matched almost entirely the Sun's own conclusions based on a few leaked quotes. "I totally expected the Sun's reporting to be horrendously biased against the BBC, and when I read it this morning I thought that was the case," said Roy Greenslade. "But Lord Hutton was just as one-sided in his criticisms. I can't believe the Sun got it right. Just about every detail was the same – even the picture of a naked woman that Hutton accidentally left in the pile of papers he sent for photocopying."

Journalists on The Mirror, which failed to get a leak of its own, this morning hit back with its own "exclusive" rehash of the facts found in the Sun's coverage, as did most other newspapers. Despite this, though, it is not yet clear what part Jordan played in drawing up the government's intelligence dossiers.
