GCHQ translator unpunished for Iraq leak

Katharine Gun, the GCHQ (Government Confidential Hush Quiet) translator sacked for telling the public what was going on, has been cleared of the charge of not keeping her mouth shut.

Mrs Gun, 29, leaked an e-mail to the Observer newspaper, believing its contents to be proof of US and UK un-sportsmanlike behaviour in the lead up to the war in Iraq. The e-mail message was encoded, but Mrs Gun, with her vast knowledge of languages, was able to decipher it.

DeadBrain set its own team of cryptogrammatists the task of decoding the e-mail and, unsurprisingly, we obtained the same information as Mrs Gun.

Encoded message: ".sreehC .raw iqarI no gnitov snoitan fo senohp pat esaelP"
Decoded message: "Please tap phones of nations voting on Iraqi war. Cheers."

For releasing this information to the public, Mrs Gun was charged under the Official Secrets Act with letting the cat out of the bag. She would no doubt have faced a prison sentence if the prosecution hadn't left its evidence inside the pocket of a sports jacket, which was stolen on Tuesday from a pub in London.

The government denies that it had any involvement in the theft of the jacket. A spokesman for the Attorney General did, however, suggest that a member of the BBC visited the pub in question and came out after a heavy drinking session with the wrong coat. When asked how he came by this information, the spokesman hinted that Lord Hutton had been in a pub across the road at the time.
