Blunkett slams compensation culture15 Mar 2004 by Flash Gorman
Home secretary David Blunkett has hit out at what he called "compensation culture gone mad". Speaking in the vague direction of a group of journalists, Mr Blunkett decried the current trend towards "demanding payment for every imagined injury".
Mr Blunkett's comments were made after it emerged that Guantanamo Bay detainee Jamal Udeen is seeking compensation for his two years of captivity without trial. "Surely people can see that this is a step too far. If we are to give this man compensation just because he was banged up and tortured for two years then it would open the floodgates for other bleeding heart claims," he said. "The government would be held to ransom by every Tom, Dick and Harry who has been appallingly treated by this country for no good reason." "We have already offered to not detain Mr Udeen any further and to put a stop to the whole torture thing but it seems that is not enough," he added. "Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it." When asked what he thought about Mr Udeen's spell in captivity, Mr Blunkett explained that he "had merely been in the wrong place at the wrong time." When asked "What place and what time?" Mr Blunkett replied "Guantanamo Bay for two years".
