Scientists excited by unique large-eared dinosaur fossil24 Nov 2004 by Malcolm Drury
British scientists are very excited about a complete fossilised skeleton of a dinosaur found near Windsor. According to Professor Brenda Shuttleworth of the University of Bootle, the skeleton is that of a hitherto unrecognised type of dinosaur, characterised by large, protruding ears. Prof. Shuttleworth told our reporter that analysis of the vertebrae suggests that the dinosaur was probably quite stiff-necked and so less flexible than most of its contemporaries. Preliminary analysis of the fossilised stomach contents suggests that the dinosaur was probably largely vegetarian, although she surmised that it may have hunted small animals for sport, citing as evidence a number of bones from what appeared to be a dog-like mammal that were found next to the skeleton. The dinosaur was probably at, or near the top of the dinosaur hierarchy. It was, said Prof. Shuttleworth, surrounded by skeletons of lesser dinosaurs in what appeared to be a hierarchical arrangement. She speculated that they may have been attendants of some kind. "It seems that it probably did not have to do much for itself," she said, "but rather relied on lesser dinosaurs from lower in the social order, if I can put it that way, to attend to its needs." Prof. Shuttleworth said the new dinosaur was only of average size and cranial capacity, suggesting that its position on the social ladder was probably not based on its own effort or on being cleverer and more adaptive than others. She said that the initial findings will be of great interest to paleo-sociologists since they seem to suggest that organised, hierarchical social structures developed much earlier than has generally been assumed. The dinosaur has tentatively been named Windsorsaurus, after the location of the find, but the name will have to be ratified by the international geological community, Prof. Shuttleworth said.
