Howard backs plan for Conservative ID card14 Dec 2004
The current interim leader of the Conservative Party and part-time elf, Michael Howard, today backed government plans for an identity card for his party. Many in the shadow cabinet had been reluctant to introduce such a scheme on the grounds of cost, infringement of civil liberties and not wanting to start supporting the government on everything again. The Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, was one of the most vociferous opponents, arguing that he knew who he was and who "at least some" of his colleagues were, and that was good enough for him. He is also not keen to brown nose David Blunkett on the issue at the Dispatch Box, "because we all know where his arse has been recently". Mr Howard hopes that an identity card scheme will help the general public recognise the party's leading figures – something it currently struggles to do. He has also suggested that it could help another terrorist outrage within the party, such as re-electing Iain Duncan Smith as leader.
