Tesco wages soar above £2 an hour
Retail giant Tesco has stunned the business world with the announcement that staff salaries are to rise above the £2 hourly rate for the first time. Workers across the country will now be paid £2.03 an hour (£2.07 in London and the South East.)
This also marks the first time that any supermarket has paid such a high rate to its workers, and is being hailed as a great leap forward for employees in the sector.
Chief Executive Sir Terry Leahy said that the increase reflected the hard work and dedication of the company's staff in achieving domination of the retail world.
"We will sell anything, to anyone, from anywhere, at worrying low prices. Our army of unflinchingly obedient minions are the key to our outstanding success. They deserve this rise, just as I deserve my multi million pound annual remuneration."
The chain's chief rival, Asda, has condemned the move as a "cynical bribe" for media publicity and confirmed that its wages would remain fixed at £1.87 for one hour of backbreaking, monotonous grind.
