Prince Just William to tackle plight of homeless13 Sep 2005 by Malcolm Drury
Prince Just William is to become patron of Centrepoint, a homelessness charity, following a short spell volunteering there, it has been announced. At a press conference earlier today Sir Michael Peat-Moss, spokesman for Clarence House, said that William spent two days, along with his friends Douglas Ramsbottom, Ginger and Henry, and his dog Prince Jumble, at the charity's shelter. During his volunteer work the Prince, whose own personal development plan involves becoming king, helped young people to review their personal development plans and to find more permanent accommodation. Asked about the latter, Sir Michael said it was unlikely that it would stretch to finding the homeless accommodation at Clarence House or one of the many palaces, castles and large country houses inhabited by the various members of the Royal Family. "It's simply a matter of space," he said. "The fact is, given the number of servants required to ensure the smooth running of the Family's affairs there just isn't enough of it." He added that at Highgrove alone thought was being given to erecting several surplus World War 2 army huts to accommodate the servants. Centrepoint resident Brenda "Scabby" Shuttleworth said that William was a great help. "He was just like one of us," he said, "and he really got stuck in, serving lunch and everything. Except he wouldn't do the washing up, and when I asked him if he could lend me a couple of quid until Friday he just laughed and said sorry, he was a bit skint himself. As if!" William's effort follows a long tradition of members of the Family serving as patrons of various charities and Good Causes. For example, his uncle Andrew supports the British Association of Helicopter Fly-In Golfers and his grandfather, Prince Philip, is a well known for his patronising. Prince Charles is patron of the Association of Friends of Nicholas Witchell and his wife, Camilla, has recently assumed the role of patron of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, one of Britain's most influential and prestigious charities. Asked if a patronage appointment for Prince Harry Potter was in the cards, Sir Michael abruptly excused himself and left, muttering something about certain standards to maintain.
