Swiss man demands his Turner Prize shed back16 Dec 2005 by Paul Tanter
This year's Turner Prize winner was facing charges of theft last night after a Swiss man claimed his shed had been stolen.Artist Simon Starling, who won £25,000 for his work "Shedboatshed", was being questioned at a North London police station, having earlier been arrested at a nearby art gallery. Mr Starling, 38, was released on bail pending further enquiries. The arrest follows claims by Swiss Naval Officer Gregöry Von Mullet that he returned from a six-month tour of duty to find his shed missing. Speaking to DeadBrain from his hometown of Schweizerhalle, Mr Von Mullet said: "I had returned home after many months away, and was planning to finally get round to some jobs that needed doing. I'd been putting them off for ages – you know how it is. Anyway, after I put my uniform in the washing machine and changed into my DIY clothes, I went down to the bottom of the garden, and my tools were scattered all over the place. The shed was just gone." It was this very shed that Mr Von Mullet believes Starling turned into a boat, before using it to sail away into the sunset. He continued: "As I was putting my tools in the garage I was listening to the radio. The news said that this year's Turner Prize had been won by someone who had stolen a shed from my hometown and turned it into a boat, then back to a shed. I got the next day's paper and sure enough, there's the guy – standing in front of my shed with a cheque for £25,000." Mr Von Mullet then called police in London, who arrested Starling immediately. Mr Starling refused to comment to DeadBrain about the issue, but Mr Von Mullet claims he is willing to drop the charges if Mr Starling splits the prize money. "All I want is what I'm due. The cost of a new shed, plus a little for my inconvenience. I've had to convert my boat into a shed to store my Black and Decker Workmate, so I'll need to turn it back into a boat at some point. I'll probably enter it for next year's Turner Prize too."
