Typo ends British army presence in Iraq4 Jan 2006 by Peter Placeserver
All British Army troops stationed in Iraq have left their bases and are making their own way back to the UK, our Iraq correspondent reports in late, breaking news. Across the country thousands of squaddies have been sighted trying to hitch lifts to Jordan or Kuwait after Baghdad airport proved unable to cope with the vast numbers trying to catch the next flight out.The cause of these events (at first believed by independent observers to be a tactical redeployment and later likened to mindless pandemonium) has been traced to an order sent last night at 2330 hours GMT from the Ministry of Defence to British Operational Headquarters (Iraq). Speaking to journalists, Lt-Col. Douglas Ramsbottom explained: "The message should have read 'All soldiers on operational duty south of Mosul are ordered to the desert'. Unfortunately, the lateness of the hour had allowed a mistake to creep in unnoticed, so that what they actually received read 'All soldiers on operational duty south of Mosul are ordered to desert'". "I would like to take this opportunity," Lt-Col. Ramsbottom continued, "to praise the conduct of the Army personnel involved, who carried out their duty impeccably and unswervingly, often at considerable risk to themselves. The United Kingdom can be proud that its security is - sorry, was - in the hands of such men." With the first deserters due to touch down in Heathrow in the next few hours, the Prime Minister's office has stated that the order will not be countermanded. "Government policy has consistently been that once embarked on a course of action we persist in it, no matter how much it turns out to have been a huge mistake," said a spokesman. "The invasion of Iraq demonstrates that." Related Articles Iraq wakes up to new 'Sunni Delight' drink 20 Jul 2005
