Menzies Campbell admits he is straight

Liberal Democrat leadership contender Sir Menzies Campbell admitted today that he is straight and apologised for misleading people.

The 64-year-old MP revealed he considered dropping out of the leadership contest but hoped the public would accept him for who he is, a heterosexual Liberal Democrat.

The non-scene Campbell had previously claimed that he must be "looking in the wrong parks, at the wrong time" when confronted by newspapers as to why he'd never been seen cottaging.

Sir Menzies revealed on Radio 2 that the situation had become "unmanageable" as allegations of a 30-year relationship with a 58-year-old woman were due to appear in this Sunday's News of the World.

The acting leader won his seat in a hotly contested election in 1987 against the straight rights campaigner Garry Bushell. Mr Campbell was even presented as the contender 'most likely to bend over backwards' for his constituents.

His leadership rivals have publicly played down the issue saying that Campbell should "on no account" be pigeon-holed or made a whipping boy of.

Privately, though, a party insider told DeadBrain that Sir Menzies had "buggered his chances".
