Plan to save the world "too expensive" says US

A plan by the United Nations to save the earth from global warming, health pandemics, poverty and war has been vetoed by the US administration for being 'too expensive'.

The groundbreaking move had been agreed by leading figures in every other country around the world.

This unprecedented wave of humanity washed away petty national boundaries and united traditional religious and racial divides in a show of unity and willingness to defeat the biggest evils facing mankind and to save the planet from extinction.

The US administration however could not agree to the proposal, as American citizens may have to pay more to fill up their cars.

The scheme relied on an international pollution permit trading system, a freeing-up of the financial markets and incentives for medical companies to produce vaccines to eliminate malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/Aids and other pandemics.

Professor Stiglitz, former chief economist of the World Bank and a staunch critic of the way globalisation harms the poor, said: "One of the most important areas of failure is the environment. Without government intervention, firms and households have no incentive to limit their pollution."

However, US Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice countered that America quite liked things 'the way they are'. "Blimey!" she exclaimed, "We invented globalisation and don't need other countries trying to dictate to us what's best."
