Country's attention fails to focus on dead whale in Humber

Thousands of people today failed to line the banks of the River Humber as television channels and radio stations didn't switch to continuous rolling coverage of the news that a whale had become stranded. The whale, which isn't likely to be named differently but affectionately by every tabloid newspaper tomorrow morning, later died.

Speaking live to nobody on Sky News after messages were not put up across satellite channels telling viewers to switch over, reporter Greg Mullet confirmed that the whale was not located in south eastern England or a capital city. "I can't see the whale yet," he said from his vantage point in Osterley, London, "but early reports suggest that it is somewhere in the north of England, perhaps near Leeds or Manchester."

Dozens of reporters and camera crews were later not dispatched along the riverbanks, in speedboats and in helicopters. Experts estimated the whale to be "quite big" and "probably very heavy", while its species was described as being "a whale". "Whales are usually found in deep water and not rivers," Professor Douglas Ramsbottom told BBC News 24. "This one was probably lost or confused."

A whale that swam up the Thames and died in central London two weeks ago received little attention.
