Scientists identify celebrity gene

Scientists working on the Human Genome Project say they have identified a 'celebrity gene' that occurs in about 5% of the population, and which is present in the majority of today's TV 'personalities'.

Professor Douglas Ramsbottom, lead scientist on the project, said: "This is very exciting. We have identified what is now being called the 'celebrity gene' that sits within human DNA next to the 'intelligence gene'. However, it seems that the 'celebrity gene' is dominant, absorbing most of the nutrients and components of the adjacent 'intelligence gene'."

"What this means is that the average celebrity has only 1% of the intelligence of a normal person, though about 25% more intelligence than celebrity fanatics, such as Big Brother viewers, or people who are members of amateur dramatic clubs. Put into perspective it would take 317 Natasha Kaplinskys to tie a shoe lace or screw in a light-bulb, but you would need over a thousand Big Brother viewers."

DeadBrain media correspondent Greg Mullet asked several celebrities what they made of the discovery. Brittany Spears said: "What's a scientish?", Linda Barker; presenter of the BBC's 'House Invaders' said: "If you use this product you would not have to sand or prime before painting"; and Natasha Kaplinsky could not comment as there was no autocue available.

Meanwhile, scientists on the project are currently searching for a 'funny gene' using celebrities from the BBC's light entertainment schedule, but so far results are limited. However, tests on Richard Digence, often seen as a guest on the Channel Four programme 'Countdown', unexpectedly identified a 'really annoying, unfunny, pain-in-the-arse gene'.
