Bird Flu: Police overwhelmed by crank calls to supermarket poultry aisles6 Apr 2006
Police across Britain have complained after dozens of people called in to report dead poultry in supermarket refrigerators. Following government advice, observant citizens have been spotting dead birds all over the country. Most were chickens, ducks or turkeys.Greg Mullet, a 14-year-old schoolboy who regularly buys extra-strength cider from the Bootle branch of Tesco, told DeadBrain that he had spotted a number of uncooked dead chickens in the poultry aisle. "I asked my Citizenship teacher what to do and she said call the police," he said. "I've now been given an ASBO and told not to go near the shop again. I don't know where I went wrong. How am I going to get drunk now?" In a similar incident in Guildford, pensioner Brenda Shuttleworth became hysterical in Waitrose after visiting the ITV News Bird Flu Information Bus in the car park outside. Staff had to close the store for an hour and dispose of all poultry-based products, including chicken nuggets, before she would calm down. "This over-reacting really must stop. People should use their common sense and call the RSPCA instead," said Chief Inspector Douglas Ramsbottom from the Metropolitan Police. "We have much more important things to do than attending crank calls about plucked, plastic-wrapped chickens in ASDA – arresting pensioners under the Anti-Terrorism Act, for example." In Hull, where Humberside Police's controversial system has been categorising reported incidents according to government priorities, bird flu has been placed at number 84, some way below speeding, parking on double yellow lines and crossing the road without looking. The current target for responding to a reported dead swan is eight weeks. Late NewsPolice sources in southern Wales have told DeadBrain that a man who ram-raided his village shop, stole all of the poultry products and a packet of Smarties, packed them into a Transit van, covered them in diesel and drove off a cliff is recovering in hospital.Related Articles Government urges no panic over bird flu; panic spreads 6 Apr 2006
